New Gyms

"If the cartoon is this MUSH's theme, then why the heck do you have gyms we never saw?!" Good question. Though Ash himself only visited eight gyms, the cartoon gives strong evidence that there are more than eight out there.

1. In the Battle for the Badge episode, Gary Oak arrived at the Viridian City Gym to fight Giovanni and he already had ten badges. Assuming Ash and Gary hit the same seven gyms before arriving at Viridian, Gary got three more somewhere along the way.
2. In the Bad to the Bone episode, Otoshi the Marowak trainer had six of the badges Ash had, but two more different ones. (Different from the ones Gary had, too.)
3. Also in Bad to the Bone, there was an unnamed trainer (the one Jessie tried to steal the badges from) who had eight totally different badges, unlike any Otoshi, Gary, or Ash had.

So that gives us thirteen unseen gyms! We're not going to make that many new ones, but we are going to fill the gaps left between the eight Ash visited.
